How good is Renault Kwid as your first car?

Post by jenniferroche » Sun Oct 14, 2018 5:58 am

Since the launch of the Renault Kwid, it became a household name in the country. While the company was not counted as a giant automaker at past, the Kwid is one of the main reasons behind the automaker's massive growth.

We Indians prefer affordable vehicles with a combination high mileage and great design. The Kwid successfully matches those two conditions and these are the main reasons behind its success.

So here in the following article, you will get to know whether this entry-level hatchback is the right choice to be your first car or not.

The muscular design
The Renault Kwid gets bold side cladding that are given in black. The design of the vehicle is a mixture of simple and bold looks. Despite having an affordable price, it comes with a muscular outlook, which is one of the key things behind its success during past years.

Good enough powertrain
Coming to the engine, the vehicle comes with a three-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine that is capable of churning out a maximum of 64 bhp power and a peak torque of 91 Nm. However, this engine is offered for the top variants only. The lower variants derive their required power from a three-cylinder, 0.8-litre engine which can provide up to 53 bhp of power and 72 Nm of peak torque. The two engines come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, an AMT option is provided to the higher variants.

There is nothing much to speak about the inside of the Kwid since the car has a large amount of space in the cabin. Both on the front as well as the rear, passengers get ample leg space to sit comfortably. The RXL variant of the car features power windows along with central locking system. Also, some cup holders, containing cubby holes, are provided for storage spaces.

Mind-blowing mileage
If you are looking to buy your first car, then mileage will be one of the most important aspects which needs to be checked. The Renault Kwid is now bossing in this segment owing to its mind-blowing mileage.

The smaller engine of the hatch offers an ARAI-certified 25 kmpl mileage, which is quite impressive. However, for the bigger 1.0-litre engine, the mileage falls down slightly to around 24 kmpl.

Decent safety equipment
You will surely be aware of the fact that affordable vehicles do not have a wide range of safety equipment. Hence, the Kwid too offers some mediocre safety features which are quite acceptable.

The vehicle comes equipped with disc brakes at the front axle, while the rear ones get only drum brake. There is no ABS or EBD provided as the power or the top speed of the hatch is not that much.

Speaking of the safety features, the mini-hatch comes with remote keyless entry with central locking. Also, both the front as well as rear passengers have pre-tensioner seat belts which will restrict their movements during an accident.

What is our verdict?
In the mini-hatchback segment, the Renault Kwid is already one of the big names. Although it still does beat the sales of the Maruti Suzuki Alto, it can be ranked as a worthy option to be considered. To buy the base variant of the Kwid, you will have to pay around Rs. 2.5 lakhs.
