I havent had this kind of issue but mine is that the game doesnt take in more than 3 keystokes at a time and my keyboard supports up to 5 being pressed at the same time. This makes it a little bit harder to drive as I cant press forward, boost, turn left/right and jump, so what I have resorted to do is not pressing forward at all, tough it would be nicer if it would let me press more than 3 at a time.
And I threw out the idea of using a controller since I have a PS2 controller trough an USB adapter, I did get some of the controller simulators to work but I already was already used to the keyboard so it works better for me.

The 3 keys thing may very well be software bound on our end. I don't know specifically as I was not in charge of the input implementation. For keyboard controls I usually don't hold the forward key either as it doesn't particularly matter in most of the levels. The challenge levels is where the forward key may be needed as some of those levels have some very rough turns. Scissor keys are a nice thing to have on a keyboard as well, much finer turning and rolling compared to a default keyboard. Too much delay in the keystroke for my liking though I suppose it depends on the keyboard.

Have you tried using the NumPad arrow keys? That can often solve problems of too many keys pressed at once (arrow keys counting as a "SHIFT" press as well? I can't remember...).

EDIT: What? I posted this weeks ago, why is it suddenly a new post?

For me the controller controls where actually tiring. I think you will have to set the controls properly in keyboard to play it without much problem. Make sure that you use the controls that you use for other racing games.
